Why are there so many varieties of Dracaena?
The Dracaena Family makes up a large portion of the professional interiorscapers arsenal. This diverse group of botanicals number well over 40 varieties, including some of the most popular air scrubbing plants we use to “green up” our interior spaces. Dracaena Massangeana, Warneckii, Lisa, Arborea and Janet Craig are just a few of the commonly available varieties, but Dracaena Marginata is hands down the most popular. The Marginata is a quick grower sporting long narrow foliage with a red margin. Marginatas are often prized for there interesting woody trunk more than their foliage.
Dracaenas tolerate low light, low humidity and infrequent watering. They will survive in a wide range of temperatures if hydration is adjusted accordingly. Although Dracaenas will tolerate lower light levels they do best in bright indirect light. Water your Dracaena well and then wait until the soil is barely moist before watering again, no matter how long that takes.
Dracaenas prefer well drained soil and do not require regular fertilizing. They will occasionally drop lower leaves to make way for new growth. Dracaena varieties are notorious for developing brown tips and leaf margin burns. This can be caused by over watering, too much fertilizer, or high levels of chlorine, fluorides and salts in your water. Try filtered water or let your tap water stand for 24 hours before applying to the plants.
Keep your Dracaenas and all your plants clean and free of dust. This will make for a happy, healthy and pest free foliage friend.
